National Watermelon Day is Coming - Raise a Glass!

August 3 is annually set aside on the calendar as National Watermelon Day. Here at The Cottonwood Cove, we "celebrate" watermelons all season long, but in our case, in liquid form! Our Nebraska bar & restaurant on the Missouri River happens to be the Home of the Watermelon, a refreshing cocktail that is a must-try for anyone age 21+.

Guests at our vacation destination in the Midwest can't seem to get enough of this delicious drink. Of course, the actual melon itself is also a tasty treat to enjoy on a hot summer day. In honor of National Watermelon Day, here are a few fun facts about both the food and our signature cocktail.

Watermelon Fun Facts

- It's a fruit... AND a vegetable!?! We don't know about you guys, but we had absolutely no idea that a watermelon is actually classified as a vegetable! It is a member of the same family as cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash. Botanically though, it adheres to the meaning of a fruit, so the debate is on...

- China grows more watermelons than any other country. The fruit, oops, we mean vegetable (that'll be a hard habit to break) is often given as a hostess gift. The United States ranks 5th in worldwide watermelon production.

- Mark Twain once made a comment saying that anyone that had tasted watermelon knows what the angels eat.

- Every bit of the watermelon is edible, including the seeds and the rind. You will get the maximum health benefits out of the seeds if you chew them. They provide high levels of magnesium, zinc, and protein.

- Other healthy facts about watermelons are that they are fat-free and cholesterol-free, a good source of potassium, and high in fiber and Vitamins A & C. They also contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that can quench inflammation due to conditions like asthma, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis.

- They are over 90% water. Explorers in the past actually used watermelons as canteens.

- Some people enjoy salt on their watermelon. It brings out the juice and the flavor. Ancient Egyptians served salty feta cheese with their watermelon.

- The world record for the heaviest watermelon grown weighed in at 350.5 pounds. This feat was achieved by Christopher Kent in 2013.

Watermelon Cocktail Fun Facts

- The Cottonwood Cove's Watermelon was discovered by George Rybin, the son of the former owners of The Cottonwood, and Sharon Young, his then-girlfriend and Cottonwood employee. While on a Carribean cruise, they fell in love with a knock-you-on-your-a$$ drink and after much persuasion, Sharon sweet-talked the recipe out of the Islanders to bring it home to Nebraska.

- Our popular Watermelon is not a fruit or a vegetable, but rather a deliciously refreshing cocktail that makes a hot summer day a lot more bearable. Drinking one in our 21+ pool from the swim-up bar somehow makes it taste even better!

- Our Watermelon is most definitely not 90% water, but the delicious ingredients that do make one up are our special little secret!

- The Watermelon from our bar is completely edible, or drinkable rather, but not the cup and straw. We'll take those back when you're done.

- We don't regularly salt the rim of the glass, but if it's good on a watermelon (the food) then it just might taste good with the drink too. Let us know if you want to give that a try!

- We don't have any world records surrounding our Watermelon, but maybe that's something we can give a try in the future. What do you think, largest Watermelon ever mixed or the most served in one day? (We're probably up for the challenge!)

Now that you know all of those intriguing facts about both types of watermelons, you're all set to celebrate National Watermelon Day next week. This year it happens to fall on a Saturday which means we'll end the evening with another performance from our tribute band concert series.

Spend the day hanging out in the pool & sipping watermelons at our RV campground & marina on the Missouri River, stick around for a delicious dinner, and then spend the night dancing away to One More Round: A Tribute to Johnny Cash!

Of course, you don't have to wait until August 3 to celebrate with our watermelons. The Lodge at The Cottonwood Cove is open every Tuesday-Sunday and we're happy to mix our signature cocktail up for you whenever you get a thirst for it, all season long!
